Diary, Senegal / Switzerland, October 2016
by Marielle Furter
It has been quite some time since my last report from Senegal. The events came thick and fast and this first kindergarten year was very labor intensiv as well. It was very interesting to learn about the educational system here in Senegal, but on the other hand I was glad that the teachers had an open mind for my suggestions too. In addition we held many meetings on how the kindergarten should be structured and also how it should operate in detail. I was in contact with the parent's council, the town authorities as well as the inspectors and also other people who were responsible for the running of the kindergarten. All of this kept me busy almost 24/7. |
May 2016: My Vision came true

My Vision came true
My Vision came true. I am more than happy, that I can work as a part time kindergarten teacher since March. And of course it is a very special feeling to teach in "our" école maternelle in Niaguis. As I introduce new toys and games to our very interested and enthusiastic children, my heart beats faster. This is one of the reasons, why I will be staying in Senegl until the end of the school year, before I return to Switzerland for 3 months in the beginning of July. |
March 2016: The Furniture is here!

The Furniture is here!
It has already been more than three months since the kindergarten opened in Niaguis. In the first two weeks, the number of children kept increasing, but now the classes are staying stable with about 35 children per class. It didn't take long for us to see, that our worries concerning the quality of the teaching, as well as the well-being of the children (we thought it might suffer because of the large classes), was unnecessary. And just like that, our spontaneous idea to run the kindergarten with parallel classes wasn't needed anymore. In the worst case we will have to do it like that next year though, so no children will have to be rejected because of the lack of space. |
