When I travelled to the south of Senegal for the first time, I liked the region "Casamance" right away. Although it is the poorest region of Senegal, people were kind and helpful.

But the harsh reality is unmistakable, hardly anyone has a job, and they often lack the necessary money for basic needs. All do their best to independently earn anything with a craft or artwork.

Since hardly anyone can complete a full education, the opportunities for vocational training or higher education are very low. Thus, there are no possibilities for a permanent position. And, unfortunately, hardly anything has not changed to this day for the children. They have little prospects for a secure future.

Soon my feeling reinforced that here might by the place where I can bring myself actively for a better education and future of children. In conversation with locals I learned again and again that many children have no opportunity to attend kindergarten or a school, because the state doesn’t take  care in this region or because families often do not have the financial means to do so. Many villages have no schools or very makeshift facilities. 

Route

In the village of Abene, where I remained first for 6 weeks, I visited the kindergarten to get my own impression. In a room, without any infrastructure, I was face to face with 100 children. For the present so-called teacher, rather poor as right care of the children was thus possible, as a form of pre-school education. In this way, the children will probably never have the opportunity to gain experience in different areas, which, however, corresponds to a very natural and fundamental one. I could often experience the great enthusiasm of the children while I kept them busy with brought along game material.

So I took on first contact with responsible persons from different schools, which confirmed to me that the state actually neglected this region in many areas and also takes little care for a quality education of children.

And my mind was made up! Then one leads to another...

• Contacting and talking with school directors and inspectors, survey to the urgency of kindergartens and schools

• Talk with the Mayor of Ziguinchor, capital of the Casamance region

• Contact with the existing organization "Federation Dimbaya", which is committed to the same effect for kindergarten and schools in this region. The cooperation with this organization brings us many advantages, since we can build on their experiences and relationships

• After several meetings with the main responsible person, Salif Katouné, I was able to win the full confidence to "Federation Dimbaya". We visited several kindergartens and schools, which were built by this organization and continue to receive

Why the village „Niaguis“, in the region Ziguinchor?

It is particularly striking that many children,mainly in the capital "Ziguinchor", live on the road.
With Salif Kanouté from "Federation Dimbaya" I visited several villages in and around Ziguinchor, where the urgency is particularly great. The following facts lead to these grievances.

• No separate kindergarten building, currently 50 children in a small, rented room

• No infrastructure, no play and learning materials

• Lack of financial resources from the state, which leads to a high contribution of the family, which they often can not afford
